Last May, I had the chance to meet with Ruth Soukup.
Ruth had a problem.
She loved to shop at Target.
Shopping at Target wasn’t the problem.
The problem was that Ruth didn’t have the finances to support her shopping trips to Target.
After some heated discussions with her husband, Ruth realized she had to end her Target shopping habit.
What was Ruth going to do with all the free time she had now that she wasn’t going to Target?
Ruth decided to start a blog.
With some time, Ruth became better at writing and has written several books that have sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
In her latest book, Do It Scared, Ruth shares how fear is her constant companion.
I was intrigued by this notion.
Why would anyone want to live with fear?
As I listened more to Ruth, she talked about how she was scared daily.
I thought to myself and couldn’t remember the last time I walked in fear.
As I thought more, I asked myself, why can’t you remember the last time you were scared?
Maybe I had built too many walls around my life to protect me from fear.
Was I not pushing myself enough?
Had I allowed my life to become mediocre?
Was I not pursuing a life that I was destined to live?
Was I becoming content?
All these questions got me thinking that I needed to stretch my life beyond my comfort zone.
If I do not feel fear, then maybe I’m not trying hard enough.
This morning I gave a presentation on Profit First to around thirty Real Estate Agents.
I arrived early to make sure all the technology was working properly.
I had a few minutes to mingle with some of the attendees.
There was a little voice that came into my head that nudged me to get out of my comfort zone and go meet each of the people that came to see me share my message of Profit First.
I spoke with a few of the people before the presentation.
Each person I talked to was lovely.
Yet, I didn’t push myself enough to greet each person.
It would have been a simple thing to introduce each person and ask them their name.
I’m confident if I had said hello to everyone, then the presentation would have been a smidge better.
Why?
Because I would have had a connection with each person.
Why didn’t I take the time to say hello to each person?
Because I gave into my fear.
So next time I go to do a presentation, I’ll do a better job of saying hello to everyone.
That’s the name of the game.
Do a little bit better each time…
And be willing to Do It Scared.
